UK to lead multinational military training exercise to prepare for peace in Ukraine

Eleven countries are rehearsing a force that would deploy only after fighting ends and at Ukraine’s request.

TL;DR

  1. The United Kingdom and France are leading an exercise for a multinational force intended to support Ukraine after fighting ends.
  2. The exercise tests command arrangements, movement of personnel and equipment, and the integration of land, air and maritime components.
  3. The force would deploy only after hostilities cease and at Ukraine’s request; no ceasefire or deployment date has been set.

The UK Ministry of Defence said the United Kingdom would lead a multinational exercise to prepare for a possible postwar Ukraine mission. The Associated Press reported that the drills in Poland involve 11 European nations and 2,800 soldiers. [1][2] [1] [2]

The exercise is designed to test command-and-control arrangements, movement of personnel and equipment, and the integration of force components. The UK government says the participating countries are Belgium, Estonia, France, Germany, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain, Sweden, Türkiye and the UK. [1] [1]

The planned Multinational Force-Ukraine would support Ukraine’s future security by helping regenerate its forces and enabling safer skies and seas. The UK says it would enter Ukraine only once fighting has ceased and at the request of Ukraine’s government; it would not conduct peacekeeping or ceasefire-monitoring duties. [1][2] [1] [2]

This is preparation for a contingency, not a deployment decision. AP reports that ceasefire negotiations have stalled and that disagreement over territory and security guarantees remains; the conditions for the force to move into Ukraine have therefore not been met. [2] [2]

Why it matters

The exercise turns allied planning for a postwar security role into a concrete readiness test, but its remit is conditional and distinct from peacekeeping. Whether it becomes operational depends on a cessation of hostilities, Ukraine’s request and unresolved political negotiations.

Editor's note

Exercise scope and deployment conditions follow the UK government statement; AP provides independent reporting and negotiation context.
